An hero is someone that helps others out in a good or in a bad time.In the novel by Reyna Grande we

learn about our protagonist Juana Garcia who goes through many challenges in order to achieve her

goal of go to find her father,this novel exemplifies a monomyth because our Hero, Juana, encounters,

shadows,allies,shapeshifters,and eventually changes from a girl who is timid she scared to a woman

who is well dressed with an education and money.

Every great hero,has to overcome a shadow,a shadow that brings them pain and torment.Juana is no

exception to this rule.She has to overcome Don Elias. Don Elias hurts Juana by rape her mom and the

rape her too.They kill him.Though it seems that Juana may be defeated and broken by this person,she

manages to overcome him by "through the cracks between the bomboo stick she saw something that

made her eyes widen with disgust".
